Anukokunda (unexpectedly), is the title of their movie. Scripted, shot and edited in 48 hours, little did the filmmakers realise that just as unexpectedly their life would change. From a small office in a Hyderabad bylane, they are off to Cannes now.
Anukokunda Short Film -- Short Listed For Cannes Film Festival
Behind the Scene: Things were normal at the production house, Vinoothna Geetha. A team member informed Ranjith Kumar, executive producer and a director in the firm, about a mail. Ranjith dismissed it as spam. It was only when a friend called and informed that his film was in the Cannes shortlist, did Ranjith realise what he had done. That was three days ago. Yet, “the feeling hasn’t sunk in.”
The company was officially registered in 2010 by four friends from HPS — Tharun Bhascker, Ranjith Kumar, Sankeerth Reddy and Upendra Varma — all engineers by qualification, filmmakers by choice.Despite a number of short films that won them accolades, they catapulted into the limelight after winning the 48-hour film contest’s Hyderabad chapter. “I’ve never shot romance. But when we got the genre, I took it up as a challenge,” says Tharun Bhascker, director of Anukokunda. Ranjith adds, “We never thought we would reach such heights. The last thing we heard about Anukokunda was that it was shortlisted to be screened in LA as part of the 48-hour film contest.”
The four friends’ journey in films has been surreal. Question them on whether they ever imagined such a day and Ranjith says, “No. We make films and forget about them. We don’t pay much attention to what happens after that.”
Despite shooting many films, this particular romantic short film attracted more attention, Anukokunda was a new high.
“Even though we’ve shot films with better story lines. The best part of Anukokunda is that it was conceived, shot and presented within 48 hours. Actually 30 hours,” says Tharun.
They are now venturing into T’wood with a feature that is being produced by a big producer, “It’s too early to talk about anything, it’s not just us, even Ritu, lead actress, and Shravan, who gave music, have bagged a few films,” says Ranjith. “We owe our success to the team. We have grown together and they are our biggest support and critics too,” says Tharun.
The team members, who also owe their success to Tharun’s parents Geetha and Vudhay, will leave for Cannes in May.
